Mercedes College students explore the world of start-ups

Mercedes College students in the IT Angels club were given a snapshot of the world of start-ups yesterday after school when they visited SpaceCubed in the city.

This amazing space, located in the old Reserve Bank, is filled with interesting, quirky workspaces. SpaceCubed is all about creating a community of entrepreneurs, developing programs that members can access, and providing networking opportunities.  From its humble beginnings a few years ago, SpaceCubed now has 750 members who share the space with other like-minded individuals who are willing to share information and be mentors to others.

The General Manager of SpaceCubed, Ophelie Rat said more women were entering the once male dominated field of technology. She introduced two young women to the students who use SpaceCubed to help develop their business ideas.

After graduating and working in different industries Marianne Annereau took 10 years before she found a business which interested her.  She is now the only female 360-degree Google photographer for the Google Streetview app, which makes it possible for customers to walk through the inside of businesses.  Marianne’s http://businessphotos.com.au is the only business Google Street View provider for Perth.

Anna Powell, a marketing graduate from New Zealand, found herself in a job with a film producer, which she had little knowledge about.  With the support of her employer, she had travelled to San Francisco, the world’s hub of start-ups, and to China where she was thrust into meetings with investor heavyweights. She found herself in Perth and with the help of SpaceCubed and through the networking opportunities offered to her, was successful in achieving a grant and subsequently won the 2016 RAC Seedspark prize for WA Start Up’s. The success has seen her partner with the RAC and Anna’s ‘Yabble’  http://www.yabblezone.com/ business is now in the midst of market testing and will soon be launched in Perth before going national, and then to the UK.

Year 9 student, An Tran, said hearing the women speak was really empowering.  “It showed us that women can be just as good as men in this type of industry”.
