From the Principal: Term 4, Week 4 2025

Posted on 06/11/2025

Dear Mercedes College Families

As Term 4 progresses, it is remarkable to see how quickly the year is drawing to a close. This week we see the beginning of examinations for our Year 11 students, and we wish them every success as they approach this important milestone in their learning journey.

On Friday 25 October, the Mercedes College community came together to celebrate the outstanding academic and personal achievements of our students and staff at the 2025 Presentation Night. Hosted at Trinity College, the evening was a wonderful reflection of the dedication, talent, and spirit that defines our College. It was a privilege to acknowledge the many students who have demonstrated excellence and growth across a wide range of disciplines, as well as the staff who supported and inspired them throughout the year. We extend our congratulations to all award recipients for their hard work and commitment. We also sincerely thank our staff, families, and wider community for the invaluable roles they play in nurturing the growth and success of every Mercedes student. It was a memorable night that captured the essence of our shared pursuit of excellence.

We were honoured to host the Seeds of Justice Conference here at Mercedes College on Monday 27 October, welcoming students from Mercy schools across Perth for a day of learning, reflection, connection and Catholic social teaching. Inspiring guest speakers, Damien from Shopfront and Simon from The Big Issue, led thoughtful discussions on homelessness, mental health, and the importance of community compassion. The day concluded with a moving liturgy, reminding all participants of the ongoing call to live out the Mercy values in our daily lives.

On Wednesday 29 October, Mercedes College proudly commissioned the 2026 Prefects in a special liturgy marking the beginning of their leadership journey. Joined by family, friends, and staff, each student was formally presented with their badge, symbolising their commitment to serve the College community with dedication and integrity. The ceremony reflected the legacy of our foundress, Catherine McAuley, whose deep faith in God’s providence and unwavering commitment to service reminds us that true leadership is grounded in compassion with hope, courage, and connection. We congratulate our newly commissioned Prefects and look forward to the positive impact they will make as they influence and shape the future of Mercedes as the 2026 Prefect Council.

Our Mini Mercies Social Action girls hosted a morning tea for the Sisters of Mercy this week alongside key staff members. The girls loved being with the sisters, and hearing about their stories and adventures of days gone by. Interconnection between the generations within a cultural group is such an important aspect of building community and preserving history and tradition. We are blessed to have the sisters return to us for occasions such as these.

It is with excitement that we watch the beginnings of the redevelopment of our College Hall. This project represents a major step forward in enhancing our learning facilities, particularly for technologies and contemporary education spaces. While this stage of construction temporarily impacts access to the Hall and Oval, it marks an exciting milestone for Mercedes College, with completion anticipated at the end of 2026.

As the final weeks of the year approach, our students and staff continue to demonstrate remarkable energy, purpose, and community spirit. I look forward to all that the remainder of Term 4 will bring as we work towards the conclusion of another successful and inspiring year at Mercedes College.

Warm Regards,

Dr Lucie McCrory
