Year 11 student Sarah Munckton has graduated from the Future Female Leaders Program, an initiative designed to empower young women to develop their leadership skills, confidence and capacity to create positive change within their communities.
The program brought together secondary students from across Western Australia, providing opportunities to engage with experienced mentors, industry leaders and like-minded peers. Through a combination of online and face-to-face workshops, participants explored topics including influence, critical thinking and self-awareness, while also working closely with mentors to develop and refine their own projects and ideas.
For Sarah, one of the most valuable aspects of the experience was the opportunity to connect with others who shared her passion for leadership. “My favourite part of the program was meeting new people, both the other participants and the mentors and industry leaders who share the same passion for leadership that I do,” Sarah said.
Throughout the program, students were encouraged to challenge themselves, embrace new perspectives and develop the skills needed to lead with confidence and authenticity. Through one-on-one mentoring sessions and collaborative learning experiences, participants gained insight into the realities of leadership and the impact they can have in their future workplaces and communities.
Reflecting on her experience, Sarah said the most significant lesson she learned was that unexpected opportunities can often lead to personal growth. “The biggest lesson I learnt was about redirection and how something unexpected can be the best thing to happen.”
The skills and confidence Sarah developed throughout the program have already begun to shape her leadership journey. Recently selected as a member of the 2027 Mercedes College Prefect Council, Sarah is looking forward to drawing on the lessons gained through the Future Female Leaders Program as she takes on this important role within the College community.
Deputy Principal Teaching and Learning, Kirsty Murphy, said the program provided an outstanding opportunity for students to develop both as leaders and individuals. “Programs such as Future Female Leaders empower young women to recognise the value of their voice, embrace new challenges and develop the confidence to lead with purpose. Sarah’s thoughtful approach to leadership and willingness to learn from others throughout the program is something of which we are incredibly proud.”
Sarah’s participation reflects Mercedes College’s commitment to nurturing confident, compassionate and capable young women who are prepared to make meaningful contributions within their communities. We congratulate Sarah on this achievement and look forward to seeing where her leadership journey takes her next.
