Principal Report
Dear Mercedes College Families
Welcome back to Term 3. I have heard that our students and staff enjoyed a restful and rejuvenating three-week break and are returning with renewed energy and enthusiasm for the term ahead.
Over the holiday period, our Ursula Frayne statue was relocated from outside the convent to her new home – on the lawn in front of the Ursula Frayne building. After many years watching over the College from the convent, now quiet and without the Sisters by her side, it was time for Ursula to join the heart of Mercedes life among the students and staff she has inspired for generations. Ursula now overlooks the beautiful St Mary’s Cathedral as well as St Josephs and is enjoying the intermittent sunshine and the daily buzz of student life from her new, broader perspective. Her presence on the lawn is a meaningful reminder of her legacy and the spirit she continues to inspire in our community.

Many of our students took the opportunity to travel and compete nationally over the holidays, achieving success in a range of sports, academic pursuits, and artistic endeavours. We extend warm congratulations to all, and we look forward to following your ongoing aspirations and achievements throughout the year.
As Term 2 came to a close, we celebrated some wonderful moments in our College community. Our Interhouse Athletics Carnival was a highlight, culminating in a vibrant Athletics Assembly where we proudly recognised outstanding individual and House achievements. Congratulations to all of our athletes, who showed remarkable dedication and resilience throughout the carnival, especially given the challenging weather conditions. Special commendations go to our 2025 record breakers: Eva Tomasini for breaking the Year 8 records in the 1500m and 800m, and Jessica Boyes for her Year 10 1500m record. Congratulations is also extended to Wright House for being crowned the overall Champion House this year. We are incredibly proud of the sportspersonship, House Spirit, and effort demonstrated by every student who participated.

During our winter holidays, our Languages Tour Group returned from an unforgettable European summer immersion through Italy and France. From exploring Rome’s historic landmarks to enjoying Parisian culture and the scenic Loire Valley, our 21 students embraced every opportunity to practice their language skills and immerse themselves in new cultures. Senior students Addison and Lucy shared pictures and reflections at our Whole School Assembly this week, highlighting the personal growth, friendships, and memories made along the way. The entire group showed enthusiasm, adaptability, and respect – qualities that embody the spirit of Mercedes College. The students thanked the accompanying teachers; myself, Prof Famiano, and Madame Planson-Hawes for the guidance throughout this enriching experience. The whole presentation was a thoughtful and engaging display of gratitude.

At the end of last term and over the break, we have been analysing and reflecting on the outcomes of our recent School Review. This valuable process helped us identify strengths and areas for growth, shaping our future goals and strategies to enhance student experience of learning, faith, and wellbeing. The staff will unpack the outcomes during our Week 3 Professional Learning session after school. I will publish future directions and priorities, in line with our Strategic Plan, later this term in our Friday Parent Information Email (PIE) communication. I sincerely thank parents for their contributions through participation in the survey and focus group interviews.
One of the most exciting highlights this term will be the upcoming production of Legally Blonde: The Musical. Our dedicated cast and crew have poured their energy into rehearsals. They worked tirelessly over the holidays and throughout the term to bring this vibrant unforgettable theatrical show to life. We look forward to what promises to be a fantastic weekend of performances, kicking off with opening night on Friday 1 August.
Term 3 also marks the opening of the Catholic Performing Arts Festival. We look forward to attending and participating in a variety of performances where our music students will showcase their skills alongside peers from other Catholic schools. These events are a wonderful celebration of creativity and community, and we warmly encourage families to participate and enjoy the vibrant musical offerings across Perth.
As we settle into Term 3, I extend my best wishes to all students, staff, and families for a term filled with aspiration, excelling towards growth, learning, and meaningful achievement. Your continued support of the Mercedes College community is deeply appreciated, and we look forward to another productive and positive term.
Warm Regards,
Dr Lucie McCrory
