Principal’s Report: Building the Whole Person | 10 August 2023

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Social Justice Immersion Program
The prayer of Saint Teresa of Avila refers to the role we all have to bring Gospel values to the world.  The prayer states,“Christ has no body, but yours.  No hands, no feet on earth, but yours.”  A group of Year 11 students have been challenged with this message this week during the Social Justice Immersion Program.  They have talked to some of the Sisters of Mercy about work with the vulnerable in the community, visited advocacy groups and cooked for the homeless. This program is an annual focus for Year 11 students and one that leaves a lasting impression and calls for action, for those in need throughout the community.

Focus on Friendship
On Wednesday Year 7 and 8 students listened to a presentation by Claire Eaton an author, speaker and coach of young people and parents.  Her focus for the presentation was friendship.  She explored how to create a positive outlook, how to be a good friend and how to deal with friendship groups when they change. The presentation was very interactive and engaging.  Students enjoyed the session and believed they learned new strategies to foster positive friendships.

The Arts
The Sisters of Mercy have always promoted the arts as a vital component of students’ education. Our 2023 production, ‘Chicago – High School Edition’ was outstanding and received many positive reviews and comments.  Every year I think they can’t achieve at an even higher standard than before, but they do.  Once again, I was in awe of the performances, music and costumes.  We are so fortunate to have talented students and dedicated staff members committed to such an undertaking.  The community spirit inspired by the production was wonderful to behold.  Thank you to all the families who supported the event by attending and promoting it to their friends.  Thanks also, to family members who helped in some way with costumes and props.
As well as the school production our students continue to be involved in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival.  This event is run over a number of weeks.  The standard of our students’ performances is very impressive and we have received glowing feedback.
