From the Principal: Term 2, Week 9 2025

Posted on 26/06/2025

Principal Report

Dear Mercedes College Families

As Term 2 draws to a close, it is a wonderful moment to pause and reflect on all that has been achieved across our Mercedes College community.  In recent weeks, the College has come alive with events that highlight the richness and diversity of school life at Mercedes. Our Year 7 AFL team gave a spirited and skillful performance at their recent carnival, finishing second overall in a tightly contested final. Our Hockey team remained undefeated at recent ACC Hockey Challenge Carnival, taking home the championship for the second year in a row.

Our annual Interhouse Athletics Carnival was a standout event on the College calendar. It was held at WA Athletics Stadium last Friday. Despite the rainy conditions, students and staff embraced the day with enthusiasm, resilience, and true Mercedes spirit. It was a vibrant celebration of athleticism, House pride, and community. Students from all year levels gave their all, whether sprinting down the track, launching into the long jump pit, competing in relays, or participating in novelty events such as the egg and spoon and the sack race. The carnival offered something for everyone. The energy from the sidelines was equally inspiring, with colourful and creative costumes and coordinated chants supporting and encouraging the participants. The day was a reflction of our students’ athletic talents and their camaraderie, determination, and sportsmanship. These qualities created an inclusive and uplifting atmosphere that reflected the best of Mercedes College. We also extend our gratitude to all staff, student volunteers, and families who helped ensure the smooth running and success of the day.

The Music Eisteddfod was another highlight of the term, bringing together over 170 students in a celebration of musical expression and courage. The event included solo and duet performances and ensemble pieces by our Choir, Brass, Flute, Clarinet, Classical Guitar, and Saxophone groups. The talent on display was exceptional. The supportive environment and respectful audience behaviours reflected the community spirit that defines Mercedes. Our sincere thanks to the adjudicators, accompanists, and music tutors who guided and encouraged our students so beautifully.

Our Year 9 students were fortunate to welcome the Hon. Liza Harvey OAM back to the College. A proud alumna and trailblazing leader, she delivered a powerful message on courage, perseverance, and values-led leadership. Her reflections left a lasting impression on our students and staff alike.  We also take this opportunity to congratulate Mr. Wayne Bull, former leader at Mercedes and current Executive Director of Catholic Education Western Australia, on receiving the Medal of the Order of Australia recently. This remarkable achievement underscores his dedication to Catholic education.

This week, our College came together to honour and celebrate NAIDOC Week. The week began with a MADALAH Education Day on Tuesday, where our First Nations students explored culture, identity, and connection to Country. The week culminated in a deeply moving NAIDOC Assembly, where students celebrated with a smoking ceremony and premiered a video they created, sharing their stories, language, and personal connections to land and community. The 2025 NAIDOC theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy, honours 50 years of NAIDOC and reflects our commitment to empowering the emerging leaders within our College. We are proud to be in a community where our First Nations girls can be heard, celebrated, and supported to lead. We thank all students and staff who contributed to NAIDOC Week and affirm our continued commitment to building a culturally responsive and inclusive school, where learning and respect go hand in hand.

As we wrap up this rich and fulfilling term, I want to commend all students, staff, and families for your contributions. This community of care could not be the thriving place that it is, without your continued support and dedication – thank you.

I wish you a safe and restful three-week Semester break. May this time be one of reconnection with loved ones, reflection, and rejuvenation. We look forward to welcoming our students back to start Term 3 on Monday 21 July, refreshed and ready for the opportunities that lie ahead.

Warm Regards,

Dr Lucie McCrory
