The Mercedes Prefects led the school in celebrating Purple Bra Day today. Staff and students were encouraged to buy a purple ribbon with a gold coin donation to support Breast Cancer Care WA, while Year 12s wore purple bras over their sport uniform, and led fundraising efforts around the school.

Where pink ribbons are synonymous with breast and gynaecological cancer research, in WA, purple ribbons (and Purple Bra Day itself) focus more on the emotional, practical and financial needs of those affected by cancer. The money raised will go to Breast Cancer Care WA, who provide personalised nursing, counselling, and financial support to people affected by breast cancer. By donating to purple, money goes to West Australians who are in need of support.

This is a cause close to the hearts of many at the College and in the wider Mercedes community. Breast Cancer Care WA shares very close connections with Mercedes College, with alumnae, parents and a former College board member among the organisation. They shared their gratitude with the Prefects and the community.

Well done to the Prefects on their outstanding effort in leading fundraising for this worthy cause! In keeping with Mercedes’ strong tradition of service, this event is a terrific way of raising money and awareness for a great cause, and encouraging the entire school to participate. This effort perfectly aligns with their vision and motto for this year: “I Can’t But WE Can”. Their focus has been on students and leaders supporting one another and working to promote unity within the school.
