As Term 4 continues to unfold, we have shared memorable moments as a school community; farewelling students, celebrating achievements, milestones, and looking toward the future with optimism.
Last week we bid farewell to our wonderful Year 12 students. The Valedictory Assembly on Monday was a heartfelt occasion, with touching speeches and awards recognising the extraordinary contributions and achievements of the Class of 2024. Our entire student body formed a guard of honour, filling the school grounds from one side to the other, with cheers and applause as our Year 12 students departed for life beyond Mercedes. The pride and support shown by families made this day even more special. The celebration continued in St Mary’s Cathedral and then on to the Westin, where our graduates, now young women of Mercy, took their final steps as students and first steps as Alumni. It was an evening of joy, nostalgia, and hope as we reflected on the remarkable journey they have taken. Each graduate carries with her the values of our College, and we are excited to see the future they will shape.
Our Elite Dance Group made us all proud over the weekend with their performance at Telethon. Dancing in front of the crowds at RAC Arena and broadcast live across WA, they represented the College beautifully, contributing to a cause that raised a record $83 million for children and families in need. We extend our heartfelt thanks to their teachers, Miss Robinson and Miss Hunt, and all who supported them.
A group of our future prefects for 2025 had the opportunity to attend the Perth Youth Forum, where they passionately discussed key issues for youth such as sustainability, mental health, and the rising cost of living with the Hon Patrick Gorman MP and the Minister for Youth, Hon Anne Aly. It was inspiring to see them speak so confidently on matters that will shape their future and our community. Additionally, our 2025 Year 12 student leaders visited Council House, where they engaged in meaningful discussions about governance, politics and community with the Lord Mayor, the Hon Basil Zempilas, Chief Executive Officer Michelle Reynolds and Councillors. Their enthusiasm and thoughtful questions reaffirmed the strong leadership qualities developing within our students.
It was a privilege to celebrate three of our long-serving staff members at the CEWA Awards Breakfast this week. Mr Tony Pham, Mrs Paula Campos, and Mrs Sonya Roberts have collectively dedicated 100 years to nurturing students and guiding them with care and professionalism. Their impact has been immense, touching the lives of thousands of students and families. We are grateful for their continued commitment to the life of our College.
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Prof. Maria Famiano as Head of Learning Area – Languages. Prof. Famiano has been an invaluable member of our teaching team, has been Acting Head of Learning Area – Languages during Semester Two this year and we look forward to seeing her lead the next chapter of Languages Department with passion and expertise.
On Tuesday, we welcomed 30 prospective families to the College for our Principal’s Morning Tea and Tour. It was a wonderful opportunity to share what makes Mercedes so special. Our Year 10 student ambassadors ensured the morning was a great success. We always look forward to welcoming new families into our caring community.
Finally, it was a joy to commission our 2025 Prefects at a special Mass held in the Chapel this Wednesday. This significant ceremony marked the start of their leadership journey, and the morning tea that followed was a fitting conclusion, with staff, parents, and students coming together in celebration.
