Principal Report
Dear Mercedes College Families
Welcome to Term 4, the final leg of the 2025 school year. This term is always rich with events that bring the year to a close, filled with energy, anticipation, and a deep sense of pride as we prepare to celebrate another remarkable year at Mercedes College. The months ahead will bring reflection and celebration as we recognise the achievements of our students and the shared efforts of our community. I am confident that together, we will finish the year on a high note.
We ended Term 3 with one of our most cherished traditions, Mercy Day, which was held on 26 September. The day began with a beautiful Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral and continued with vibrant stalls, music, and activities back here at the College. It was a joyful celebration of our Mercy heritage and the spirit of service that defines our community. Together, our students raised over $25,000 for Mercy Works. The funds will support projects that bring hope and opportunity to those in need. Mercy Day reminded us of the legacy of Catherine McAuley and Ursula Frayne, women whose courage and compassion continue to inspire us nearly 180 years later.

Before the term concluded, the Music Showcase at Winthrop Hall provided a breathtaking celebration of our students’ talents. Featuring over 200 performers in 24 ensembles, the evening was a beautiful expression of creativity and collaboration. It was a privilege to be immersed in such powerful performances, each one reflecting the passion and discipline that music fosters in our students. Congratulations to all involved and to our dedicated Music Department, whose expertise and vision continue to make events such as these, an outstanding success.

During the holiday break, the majority of our Year 12 students undertook their final ATAR examinations, a significant milestone marking the culmination of their secondary studies. Their commitment and focus during this time were exceptional. In the first week of Term 4, we came together as a community to celebrate their achievements through a series of graduation events, beginning with the Morning Tea, followed by the Valedictory Assembly and concluding with the Graduation Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral and a celebratory dinner at the Westin. These occasions captured the spirit of the Class of 2025. A cohort defined by sisterhood, humour, leadership, and friendship. We are deeply proud of each graduate and wish them every success as they embark on their next chapter, carrying with them the Mercy values that will continue to guide them.

Our Year 11 students now begin their own period of preparation ahead of upcoming examinations. Their dedication and steady progress throughout the year have been impressive, and we wish them every success in the weeks ahead.
We are approaching a significant milestone next year, 180 years since the Sisters of Mercy arrived in Perth to establish the first school in Australia founded by a religious congregation, laying the very foundations of our College. To commemorate this incredible history, a series of special events and celebrations are planned for our 180th anniversary year. As part of these preparations, a call was put out to our alumni community to reinvigorate the Mercedes College Alumni Choir. The response has been truly extraordinary. We are thrilled to share that over 90 alumnae, from our most recent graduates to those in their mid-70s, are returning to Rostrevor for monthly rehearsals. The Choir stands as a resonant expression of the Mercedes sisterhood and our enduring Mercy values. The group is now rehearsing to perform at key community events throughout 2026, with their first public debut scheduled for the Sisters of Mercy Mass in January at St Mary’s Cathedral. Our sincere thanks go to the Director of Community Relations, Mrs Leili Marshall, and Director of Music, Mrs Claire Waterhouse, for championing this inspiring initiative and bringing our community’s voices together in harmony.
Presentation Evening is always a highlight of the College calendar, and it is taking place tomorrow. We look forward to coming together to celebrate academic excellence, leadership, and service for the year that was, 2025. Keep an eye on our socials on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn to stay abreast of the latest activities as they occur in real time.
Thank you to our staff, students, and families for a strong start to the final leg of the year.
Warm Regards,
Dr Lucie McCrory
