As we conclude Week 7, looking back, it has been a busy fortnight of learning, fundraising and community building activity at Mercedes. I am thrilled to share some of the highlights of the last two weeks of life at this wonderful College.
Science Week captivated our students with hands-on activities like creating native flower seed bombs and exploring ecosystems through virtual reality. These experiences not only deepened their understanding of biodiversity but also highlighted their commitment to sustainability.

Health & Physical Education Week brought vibrant energy to our school this week. The free fruit at recess and the engaging and interactive Physical Education Festival, featuring various organisations and health promotion stalls, underscored our focus on well-being and fitness.

We are immensely proud of our Year 12 students who raised over $3000 for Every Daughter Matters through their ‘Free the Hair’ day and bake sale. Their initiative is a powerful example of compassion and community spirit.

In sports, our Year 9/10 AFLW team showcased remarkable skill and teamwork at the A Division ACC AFLW Carnival.

Our Student Representative Council’s participation in the Zero2Hero Mental Health Forum equipped them with valuable insights and strategies to support their peers.

Additionally, our Year 11 and 12 Music students impressed us with their performances at the Music Recital Night.

The Catholic WA Art Angelico Exhibition attracted 183 Secondary school entries. Mercedes College was proud to celebrate the achievements of our finalists; Audrey Mickan Year 8, Aisha Siddiqui Year 8, Lilly Mitchell Year 11, Jennifer Yang Year 11, Abby McEachran Year 12, and Ruby Wells Year 12. Congratulations to Abby McEachran, who received the Phil Somers Sculpture Award for “Bear The Cost”.

We also celebrated creativity during the Book Week Parade, where students and staff brought literary characters to life with imaginative costumes. The Hall was abuzz as the girls in character paraded on stage.

Finally, our Year 8 Reflection Day on compassion, inspired by Nobel Peace Prize winner Juan Manuel Santos, was a heartfelt exploration of kindness and understanding.

Staffing – Leadership and Movements 2025
Congratulations to Miss Gill Lugton who will be taking on the middle leadership role of Head of Learning – Religious Education from 2025. Miss Lugton is currently a Head of Year and oversees the Year 7 cohort. She has thoroughly enjoyed her experiences as a Head of Year and has been excellent in this pastoral space. Miss Lugton will continue to nurture her relationships with students as the Head of Learning – Religious Education from next year.
Miss Teagan Phillips will be relocating over east next year, and as such will leave her middle leadership role as Head of Learning – Health and Physical Education at the end of 2024. Ms Phillips’ dedication and commitment to HPE over her time at the College has been significant and appreciated. We wish her every success for this new adventure.
Our Head of Learning – Technologies, Mrs Joanne Harrington will be taking a well-earnt year off next year and plans to enjoy herself and have a different pace of life. The College will be internally appointing an Acting Head of Learning – Technologies for the 2025 year.
Hay Street Roadworks Commencing Monday 2 September
Please be aware from Monday 2 September, Civcon Civil & Project Management will be commencing roadworks on Hay Street between Bennett Street and Victoria Ave on behalf of the City of Perth to convert Hay Street to two-way traffic, and the addition of extra drop-off bays. The roadworks are expected to affect the College side of Hay Street for up to 16 weeks.
For your convenience, we recommend you allow extra time for school drop-offs during this period as traffic will also be diverted around the area. Foot traffic will still be permitted for students wanting to enter the College off Hay Street via Gate 7. The Cat bus on the southern side of Hay Street will not be affected at this time. A map of the area impacted by the roadworks is here for your reference.
Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm, which make our community truly special.
Wishing our fathers in the Mercedes College community a very happy Father’s Day this Sunday.
