From the Principal: Term 3, Week 1 2024

Posted on 18/07/2024

Welcome back to Term 3. The students returned on Tuesday, rugged up and ready to embrace the colder months of learning and engagement. Our teaching staff returned on Monday and undertook Professional Learning around the topics of Student Wellbeing and Learning Technology, and we heard about the formal launch of the value of Hope at Mercedes College.

After much research and discussion both last year and this year, the Director of Faith and Mercy Charism, Mrs Vedette Lendich, introduced a sixth value into our Mercedes community. That value is ‘Hope’, which underpinned the pursuits of our founders, which binds together the other values and inspires them to manifest. Hope is formally recognised as a core value of the Mercy Ministry Companions, the lay leadership group and the Ministerial Public Juridic Person (PJP) that steward Mercy schools. It is a timely addition to our value suite given that the Pope announced the 2025 Jubilee Year will be “Pilgrims of Hope”. The Catholic News Agency reported:

“The Pope reflected on the central role hope plays in the daily lives of Christians, noting that it is an “answer offered to our heart,” thereby enabling Christians to confront pressing existential questions such as: “What will become of me? What is the purpose of the journey? What is the destiny of the world?” The pope cautioned that the absence of hope “produces sadness,” which, in turn, could impress a nihilistic attitude where one falls into the belief that there is “no meaning to the journey of life,” a tendency the Pope sharply rebuked as antithetical to Christian life. “If hope is missing, all the other virtues risk crumbling and ending up as ashes,” Francis warned.”

Our Mercedes community has long been inherently hope-filled. Various staff and students will unpack what this theme means in our community, what it looks like and how we can bring further life to this wonderful value. Hope will be formally added to our Values in culture and context from 2025.

Our Hockey Challenge Cup girls won last term and as such will compete in the semi-finals on Monday 22 July. Congratulations to our girls, their team manager, coach Ms Brown, and to Mr Fleay.

We have 30 choral students and four staff on tour in New Zealand competing in an international tournament, the World Choir Games. Please follow their wonderful work and progress on our socials.

The cast and crew of Bring It On: The Musical have been working tirelessly to produce a fantastic piece of work which runs from Friday 26 July to Sunday 28 July.
