From the Principal: Term 2, Week 1 2025

Principal Report

We hope everyone enjoyed a well-deserved break over the Term 1 holidays. It has been heartening to see the girls return to campus with renewed energy and a strong sense of purpose. They have already settled back into the rhythm of learning, co-curriculars and community life with confidence and enthusiasm.

As we step into Term 2, it is worth reflecting on the meaningful events that brought Term 1 to such a memorable close.

In the final week of Term we held our ANZAC Assembly, led with great care by the Alma May Memorial Committee. The girls shared the story of former student Alma Beard and her courageous friend Vivian Bullwinkel, honouring their service and sacrifice during the Second World War. We were privileged to be joined by Mrs Margaret Herley from the Applecross RSL Sub-branch, whose presence added great meaning to the occasion. The choir’s heartfelt performance of The Captives’ Hymn, written by a fellow prisoner in the women’s camp, was a deeply moving tribute and reminder of the strength and resilience of those who served.

On the final day of term, our Frog Jog brought the whole school community together in an uplifting display of spirit and service. The girls raised an incredible $14,572 in support of Caritas and Mercy Works, and their joy and determination were on full display as they walked a 7KM course becoming the first community group to cross the new Boorloo Bridge in the process.

Students participated in the Faith and Mercy Charism activity where each pastoral care House group came together to install vibrant Hope artworks. These colourful and thoughtful artworks reflected the girls’ creativity, under the banner of Hope. The activity offered a meaningful and creative outlet following the excitement of the Frog Jog. A heartfelt thank you goes to Mrs. Hosking and the Art staff for their exceptional dedication in curating and overseeing such an immersive and inspiring project.

The morning was filled with energy, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose, highlighting the strength of our community and the creativity of our students. Congratulations to Frayne House, who earned the most House points on the day. We closed the day with a moving Easter Liturgy, which allowed us to reflect on the meaning of Holy Week and the message of hope and renewal that Easter brings. Through scripture, prayer, and a powerful performance by our Elite Dance Team, the liturgy offered a moment of stillness and reverence.  It was an important time for spiritual reflection at a fitting way to end a busy term.

Mercedes experienced success during the Summer SASJ competition, with our Year 10 Netball and Year 8 Basketball teams taking out championship titles in the Finals. These achievements reflect not only the talent of our athletes, their dedication, teamwork, and perseverance. We are incredibly proud of all students who represented the College throughout the season and grateful to the staff who supported them along the way.

Congratulations to Ms Guida, who will take on the role of Acting Head of Year 9 when Mrs Wares steps into the Acting Deputy Principal Pastoral Care position in Term 3.  Congratulations also to Mrs Brack who will take on Ms Guida’s House Teacher Leader role in Term 3.

As we look ahead, Term 2 holds many exciting opportunities for growth, learning and connection. With fresh momentum and a strong sense of community, we continue to support one another, strive for excellence, and reach new heights together.
