Mercedes College is proud to partner with Edith Cowan University’s School of Engineering on the IGNIS Mission Student Interns Program, a pioneering STEM initiative that connects our students with real-world aerospace and environmental research. The IGNIS mission explores the link between lightning events and bushfire ignition, giving participants hands‑on exposure to technologies such as photogrammetry, geospatial mapping, hyperspectral imaging, and data analysis within a university setting.
In 2025, our students took part in an on‑campus series at ECU Joondalup featuring topic “deep dives” with academics, collaborative project work across schools, and a capstone video presentation that translated complex engineering concepts, including vibration testing and stabilisation, into engaging, student‑led storytelling. The program culminated in the IGNIS Mission Graduation Ceremony at ECU, where students, families, and staff celebrated their learning alongside industry and university guests.
IGNIS has been recognised beyond the classroom, with the program selected as a finalist in the Premier’s Science Awards 2025 (Science Engagement Initiative of the Year) which is a testament to the quality of the experience for our students.
Our involvement in IGNIS aligns with the College’s strategic priority to build partnerships with tertiary institutions and industry that expand opportunity, ignite curiosity, and prepare students for life beyond school. Through mentoring, applied projects, and exposure to university‑level facilities, students gain confidence in STEM pathways and see how their skills contribute to challenges that matter for Western Australia and the world.
