Principal Report
Dear Mercedes College Families
As we progress through Term 3, it is wonderful to reflect on the energy, creativity, and sense of community that continue to define life at Mercedes College. Over the past fortnight, our students, staff, and families have taken advantage of opportunities to learn, lead, and celebrate together, showcasing the vibrancy and warmth of our College community. This week we announced the appointment of our new Vice Principal for 2026, Mrs Nicole Huggins. We look forward to welcoming Nicole into the community in the near future.
I was delighted to attend the Parents & Friends Annual 80s Quiz Night, which was a fantastic display of the strong community that is the foundation of Mercedes College. It was great to see so many amazing parents come together in support of the College, embracing the theme with energy and enthusiasm, we even had an 80s roller-skater! Over 30 tables competed in trivia and challenges, and the evening featured a raffle and silent auction. The night was a clear reflection of the dedication and hard work of the P&F Committee, who consistently contribute so much to enhance College life through events, fundraising, and community-building initiatives. My heartfelt thanks to the Committee for their organisation, for making the evening such a memorable celebration, and congratulations to all for raising over $17, 000 for our community.

Our Year 8 students continued the 80s fun, hosting Trinity College on our campus for an 80s Quiz Night in the Coady Sports Centre. They kept the theme alive with retro music, colourful outfits, and lively team spirit. The evening was filled with fun, friendly competition, and plenty of opportunities for students to strengthen friendships between the two cohorts.

Our Health and Physical Education (HPE) Week provided an energising program promoting health, movement, and wellbeing across the College. Students participated in a variety of activities, including the Physical Education Festival, which featured fencing, volleyball, and cycling, as well as interactive Health Stalls led by Year 10 students that covered mental health, nutrition, and lifestyle topics. Creative competitions and lunchtime challenges encouraged friendly rivalry and participation, while the week concluded with a lively Staff vs Student volleyball match, celebrating teamwork, and community spirit. HPE Week was a wonderful reminder of the importance of engaging in healthy lifestyles while connecting with others.

Our McGrath Day celebrations were another highpoint during the fortnight, with students and staff contributing generously to the McGrath Foundation. The highlight was the McGrath Day Prefect Netball Match against Trinity, where both teams displayed skill, teamwork, and school pride, with Trinity taking the trophy for the annual event. Year 12 students led fundraising efforts through Bake Sales, raffles, and the sale of pink ribbons and knitted goods, making an outstanding contribution to this important cause and highlighting their dedication to service.

I had the pleasure of attending Encore in the State Theatre in Northbridge, our annual Dance Showcase, which presented the technical skill, creativity, and collaboration of dance students from Years 7 through to 12. The performances were a testament to dedication and talent. The energy of the dances and the collective alignment of the dancers was impressive. Congratulations to all participants and to Miss Robinson for her outstanding leadership, which oversaw over 150 dancers.

We were pleased to welcome visitors to our Open Day on Tuesday, where 350 people came through the campus and had the opportunity to explore Mercedes life. We hope the events of the day gave these families a sense of who we are, what we offer, and a glimpse of our beautiful, vibrant campus. The Year 10 Tour Guides were a highlight of the event, with many parents commenting to me about their impressive tour leadership skills. I suspect everyone involved played a hand in inspiring these prospective families to consider joining our community in the future.

In academic achievements, our students continue to shine, particularly in English. Congratulations to Caitlin Woon, Hannah Koay, and Annika King, who were recognised in the Spooky Story Competition for their creativity and storytelling. Additionally, ten students reached the State level of the Prime Minister’s Spelling Challenge, progressing from thousands of participants nationwide. Their dedication, skill, and focus is a wonderful reflection of the academic excellence that Mercedes College fosters.
Leadership opportunities continue to inspire our students, with over 35 Year 11 students nominating for prefect positions, including ten students who gave speeches for Head Girl in 2026. The process reflects the strength of student voice and leadership at Mercedes, and we look forward to the announcement of results with excitement.
These events and accomplishments highlight the dedication, creativity, and spirit of our students, staff, and community. Thank you for your ongoing support in fostering an environment where our girls can thrive and shine.
Warm Regards,
Dr Lucie McCrory
