Serving Our Community

Each year, Mercedes girls participate in the Mercy Service program. Mercy Service is a student-centred program which provides students with an opportunity to expand their understanding of the Christian call to serve. In keeping with the Mercy value of service, students are asked to seek out and put the needs of others before their own.

This year, students have participated in many novel ways. Students in the Outreach Program employed the Rostrevor kitchens and outdoor barbecues to prepare meals for those in need. These meals are provided to The Big Issue every fortnight. Students also volunteer in The Big Issue’s Street Soccer program at Wellington Square, which provides fun and support to the underprivileged.

Students volunteered for the Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 6 March, which this year focused especially on cleaning up and discouraging the use of single-use, non-recyclable masks. Discarded masks have become a common sight in Perth and surrounds, which may endanger local fauna and marine life.

This Term our Young Mercies drove the collection of items for “Share the Dignity,” a women’s charity working towards making an on-the-ground difference to those experiencing period poverty, homelessness or fleeing domestic violence. Thank you to all students who donated sanitary products and to our Young Mercies for running this initiative. The donated sanitary items will be distributed to anyone who menstruates and needs support.

Year 12 Homeroom groups donated and raffled off prizes to raise funds for Project Compassion. Prizes included a hamper with Frank Green reusable bottles and other goodies from the Vim & Co Pharmacy, and a $200 Mecca gift voucher. This money will go to some of the most vulnerable people both in Australia and around the world.

Finally, students participated in the Blue Tree Project; an awareness campaign designed to help spark difficult conversations and encourage people to speak up when battling mental health concerns. Students knitted a blue coat for the tree in Catherine’s Garden, serving as a reminder to students that it’s okay to share problems and ask for help.

It has been wonderful to see so many students helping their community and serving others’ needs. Well done to all of our students!
