Mercedes College is proud to offer students the opportunity to participate in The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, a globally recognised program that challenges young people to grow as individuals while making a positive impact on their community. This Award celebrates commitment, resilience, and leadership, qualities that prepare students to thrive in life beyond school.
The Award framework encourages participants to engage in a variety of activities that support personal development. Examples of activities that can contribute to the Award include:
- Community service projects
- Music and performing arts
- Sporting programs
- Cultural and international opportunities
Through these experiences, participants learn new skills, improve their physical wellbeing, volunteer their time to help others, and undertake an Adventurous Journey that fosters teamwork and independence. Each level of the Award—Bronze, Silver, and Gold—offers a structured pathway for growth, with challenges that become progressively more rewarding.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is recognised worldwide by employers, universities, and organisations as a mark of a well-rounded, motivated individual. It demonstrates qualities such as perseverance, responsibility, and the ability to set and achieve goals. It can also contribute to WACE graduation.
To achieve an Award, participants complete four core sections:
- Skill – Develop a personal interest or talent
- Physical Recreation – Improve health and fitness
- Service – Contribute to the community
- Adventurous Journey – Experience a team expedition in a new environment
Participants manage their progress through an Online Record Book and are supported by Award Leaders, Assessors, and Supervisors throughout their journey.
By taking part, students:
- Build confidence and leadership skills
- Learn perseverance and problem-solving
- Connect with their community and make a real difference
- Gain experiences that strengthen future study and career opportunities
