Welome to St John’s Pro Cathedral
Established in 1844, St John’s Pro-Cathedral was the first Roman Catholic church built in Western Australia and remains the oldest surviving church in Perth. Closely linked to Bishop Brady and Bishop Serra, it became a cathedral in 1846 and served in this role until 1865, when St Mary’s Cathedral opened.
The site also played an important role in the early work of the Sisters of Mercy, who held their first school there and later used it as a chapel.
Today, it stands as a lasting symbol of faith, history, and the beginnings of Catholic education in Western Australia.
