On Wednesday 17 June, Mercedes College students demonstrated extraordinary courage, compassion and community spirit as 44 participants took part in the Cancer Council WA Ponytail Project, cutting and donating an incredible 990 centimetres of hair to support Australians experiencing hair loss due to cancer treatment and other medical conditions.

Held in front of hundreds of students, staff and members of the College community, the event was both powerful and deeply moving. In groups, students stepped forward to have their ponytails cut, many donating well beyond the required 20 centimetres, in a visible and symbolic act of solidarity with those affected by cancer.

Alongside their hair donations, students achieved a remarkable fundraising milestone, raising more than $50,000 for Cancer Council WA, the highest total in the College’s history. This outstanding effort was recognised in PerthNow, which highlighted the scale of the fundraising achievement and the inspiring participation of both students and staff in the initiative. Funds raised will contribute to vital cancer research, prevention programs and support services, while the donated hair will be used to create wigs for those in need.

Now in its sixth year at Mercedes College, the Ponytail Project has become a defining expression of the College’s Mercy values in action. Through individual and collective efforts, including bake sales and community initiatives, students worked tirelessly to make a meaningful impact and exceed their fundraising goals.

A particularly powerful moment of the day highlighted the strength of the Mercedes College community, as Head of Year 12, Mr Dymnicki, had the opportunity to cut the ponytail of a student they had first taught in Year 7, a full-circle moment reflecting years of connection, growth and shared experience.

Principal Dr Lucie McCrory praised the students for their leadership and generosity, noting that the initiative reflects the very best of Mercy values, compassion, service and courage. The event also welcomed representatives from Cancer Council WA, who commended the students for their contribution and ongoing support.

The 2026 Ponytail Project stands as a powerful reminder that even small acts, when undertaken with purpose, can create lasting change. Through their willingness to step beyond their comfort zones, these students have not only raised essential funds and awareness, but have also demonstrated the strength of community and the impact of collective action.
