Mercedes’ Interhouse Swimming Carnival looked a little different this year. The HPE team were determined to get a Covid-safe Swimming Carnival happening at the outdoor pool at HBF Stadium on Friday the 11 of March.
205 competitive swimmers, 33 helpful student officials and 14 supportive staff headed off to the pool to compete and win points to become Individual Age Champion and to earn points for their House. All events had heats this year instead of divisions, meaning every student had equal opportunity to swim their personal best and earn points. Well done to each year group Champion and Runner Up!

This year we introduced a new event to conclude the carnival – Queen of the Pool. The six fastest 50m Freestyle times in the school were announced. These competitors then battled it out to become the Queen of the Pool. The race included students in years 9 – 12. Congratulations to Helena Toms (Year 10) who won the race and set a new 50m Freestyle record for – 28.07 seconds.
Congratulations to all students who competed and assisted on the day. Great sportsmanship, team spirit and enthusiasm were shown in and out of the pool.
And finally, a big congratulations to Cooper House for taking home the shield!

In addition, the interschool ACC Swimming Carnival look a little different too! The ACC are running small, boutique Age Level Championships targeted at elite swimmers within ACC schools. Qualifying times were set by the ACC, and student times are entered in the hope that they are seeded to compete in heats.

Mercedes finished 7th overall in the Girls Team category. We were combined with CBC for the first time this year and together finished 4th overall!
Although the carnivals were run differently this year, it was great to see our girls competitive and representing Mercedes with pride on the Interschool stage. Well done girls!
A carnival is not possible without the assistance from staff. In trying times, the staff were adaptable, enthusiastic, and extremely helpful in making the carnival possible. Thank you to everyone who assisted and made it such a great day.
