Mercedes was full of energy and smiling faces for Health and Physical Education Week this year! This year’s focus was to encourage staff and students to be active and health minded by exposing the community to a wide variety of sports and engaging them with health promotion stalls.

Physical Education Festival
On Tuesday, students enjoyed free fruit for recess which fuelled their bodies for an extended lunch of fun and activity. Representatives from a wide range of organisations set up stations in the Coady Sports Center and the College Oval, where students could participate in activities and challenges to win prizes. We were lucky enough to have representatives and elite athletes from the following organisations, who spoke to the students about how they can be involved in their sport;
- AFLW Dockers
- Rugby WA
- Netball WA
- Cricket WA
- Paddle WA
- Rowing WA
- UWA Fencing
- Hockey WA
- Volleyball WA
- Badminton WA

Students participated in goal shooting, passing, striking, rowing, vertical jump challenges and bowling challenges. The fencing stall was particularly popular with students and teachers learning the fundamentals of fencing before challenging an opponent. Thank you to all the organisations for attending our PE Festival. It is a fabulous tradition that is developing, and we look forward to continuing it in future years.
Staff vs Student Volleyball Match
The festivities continued on Wednesday with our annual Staff v Student Volleyball match at lunch time on Wednesday. The staff were led by Captain Mr Mee and the Year 12s by Captain Alyssa Olivieri. Well done to the Year 12s putting their best efforts on the court, but their enthusiasm was no match for experience. Better luck next year, girls!

Health Expo
Thursday saw a new event for the HPE week calendar. In Health Education during Term 3, Year 10 students have been developing Health Promotion stalls on a variety of topics, from sleep improvement and hydration, to vaping and technology addiction.
The stalls on display were informative, eye catching and interactive. The atmosphere was buzzing and full of energy as Year 10s were eager to present their stall to the Mercedes community as well as some special Year 6 visitors from St Columba’s School! They had a blast exploring the stalls and participating in the activities the Year 10 girls created.
Well done to all Year 10 students for setting such a high standard and engaging all visitors in the importance of health. With requests already coming in for the event next year, we’re all excited to see what the 2023 Year 10s create!

A big thank you to the Health and Physical Education Department for the massive effort they put in to organise these events!
