From the Principal: Term 1, Week 7 2026

Posted on 19 Mar at 12:02 pm

Dear Mercedes College Families,

Over the past fortnight our College community has shared many moments that reflect the spirit of Mercedes. A spirit grounded in faith, compassion, learning and service. As Term One begins to draw towards its conclusion, I would like to acknowledge the many students who have been involved in NAPLAN and OLNA assessments in recent weeks. These important milestones require focus, perseverance, and preparation, and I commend our students for the dedication and effort they have shown throughout the testing period.

It was a joy to gather with students, families and staff for our annual House Family Masses at St Mary’s Cathedral. These liturgies mark an important moment in the life of our College each year, bringing our House communities together in faith and reflection. It was particularly special to witness our Year 7 students receive their House badges, formally beginning their journey within their Houses and the wider Mercedes community. The liturgy was enriched by a beautiful dance performance choreographed by Miss Robinson and the uplifting music of our Mercedes Choir, led by Mrs Waterhouse. Moments such as these remind us that our Houses are communities of care within our wider College and are shaped by values and shared belonging. Fittingly, I had the opportunity in this 180 year to examine and research the elements held within our College crest. I shared in my address at the House Masses the story that the crest as an artefact tells, in terms of our mercy identity and the associated intentions for this community.

Earlier this month we hosted The Big Classroom professional learning day with Tom Sherrington, welcoming educators from across Western Australia to our campus. It was a privilege for Mercedes College to host such a significant gathering of teachers and school leaders, united in their commitment to strengthening teaching and learning for young people. Opportunities such as these reflect our ongoing commitment to professional growth and educational excellence.

Our community came together last Friday to celebrate International Women’s Day, a moment that holds particular significance within an all girls Mercy school. Through student-led activities and our International Women’s Day Breakfast, we reflected on the legacy of the many women who have shaped our College community. I encourage families to watch our International Women’s Day video, which beautifully captures reflections from our House Prefects on what this day means within the life of our College. Their words remind us of the enduring influence of our House Patrons and the many women of Mercy who came before us, whose courage and leadership continue to inspire the young women of Mercedes today.

The richness of our community was also celebrated during Harmony Week, when students reflected on their cultural heritage and the diversity that strengthens our College. International cuisines were sold in Catherine’s Café all week. Harmony reflections culminated in our whole school Harmony Day Assembly, where we also acknowledged students who demonstrated outstanding commitment to their learning and community. This term, 102 students were recognised for receiving five or more commendations, a wonderful reflection of the dedication, persistence and engagement shown by our students.

Our Year 10 students recently stepped away from the busyness of school life for their Reflection Day, focusing on the theme of community and service. Through guest speakers, service activities and guided reflection, students explored how individuals and communities can support those in need. These experiences encourage students to reflect on how the Mercy values of compassion, justice and service can be lived in meaningful and practical ways.

Students embraced the spirit of curiosity and challenge during Maths Week, when a range of activities encouraged creativity, collaboration and problem-solving. It was wonderful to see students engaging with Mathematics in new and exciting ways, reminding us that persistence and curiosity sit at the heart of learning.

Beyond the classroom, our students continue to demonstrate enthusiasm and teamwork through a range of co-curricular opportunities. Our Inclusive Education students recently participated in the No Limits Netball and Soccer Carnivals, enjoying supportive and welcoming environments where participation, encouragement, and community are experienced.

There is still much to look forward to as the term draws to a close, including one of our most anticipated community events, the Frog Jog. This much-loved tradition brings students together in a spirit of fun, participation and House pride while supporting important causes through fundraising.

As we approach the final weeks of Term One, I thank our students, staff and families for the energy, care and commitment they bring to our community each day. Together we continue to nurture a learning environment where young women are encouraged to grow with confidence, compassion and purpose.

Warm regards,

Dr Lucie McCrory
Principal
