Mercedes and Trinity Vie for Victory (and Charity)

Our Prefects have been very busy over the past few weeks preparing for this year’s McGrath Day Fundraiser, held last Friday 5 August. Followers of Mercedes’ social channels may have seen the video they made to build hype in the week leading up to the main event; The Mercedes vs Trinity McGrath Netball Match.

Fundraising efforts commenced on Tuesday, with Prefects spending recess and lunchtime running stalls with delicious baked treats and knitted goods (coat hangers, teddy bears, beanies and more) on sale to raise funds.

Thursday night saw Prefects enthusiastically carb-loading (read: enjoying a pizza night) in preparation for the main event. The fierce interschool “rivalry” saw some repartee flying over the schools’ and students’ social channels in the lead-up to the match, though our Prefects assure us this was all in good fun and good taste.

At Friday lunchtime, the match was held in the Coady Sports Centre, with students encouraged to come down and support the team with their brightest pink accoutrements, such as ribbons, socks, and the knitted items purchased from Tuesday’s stall. Staff shared in the fun, wearing shades of pink to show their support for the girls.

With spirits (and decibels) high, and driven higher by a very enthusiastic Mercedes cheer squad, the match itself was hotly contested. Kudos to the Trinity team for keeping their game faces up on the opposition’s home turf, but in the end Mercedes came away victorious with a final score of 19-17! Congratulations to all players for putting on a very entertaining show!

The prefects ended the week having raised over $3,500! Well done to the Prefects, as well as the Mercedes College community for contributing so generously. All funds raised from these efforts goes to support the McGrath Foundation, funding breast care nurses who provide invaluable support and care to women and men and their families experiencing breast cancer, providing physical, psychological and emotional support from the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment.
