Student competes in national Chinese Competition

Year 10 Chinese student Sophie Taylor recently participated in the Australian Regional Final Bridge Chinese Language Proficiency Competition at the Confucius Institute at UWA.  Sophie competed against students from MLC, Guildford Grammar, St Hilda's and other finalists from eastern states schools.

After competing in two preliminary heats, Sophie was one of only four WA students selected for the national competition on 20 May.  Competitors were required to undertake a written test, speaking test, impromptu conversation and to present a cultural performance in front of representatives from the Chinese consulate in Perth and the Chinese Embassy in Canberra.
Chinese teacher, Jia-Eon Teo said the standard was very high.

"We are very proud of Sophie's impressive efforts in preparing for the competition, and the courage, determination, and skills which enabled her to progress through to the finals.  Participating in such a competion is a daunting process and the public performance in front of so many dignitaries is a very nerve-wracking and character-building experience".

The occasion also presented a wonderful opportunity for our Year 9 Chinese class to see students from WA and interstate schools who were taking their Chinese studies seriously.

We congratulate Sophie on her fantastic achievement and for being such an excellent ambassador for the College.
