Library

The College Library serves the whole community – students, staff and parents. The main purposes of the library are twofold; to support the curriculum and to foster a love of reading. We therefore encourage students to visit the library for class-related and also recreational activities. Students enjoy reading quietly on their own or in groups, playing chess, and doing jigsaw puzzles, in addition to preparing powerpoint presentations, doing “Mathletics” and completing assignments.  Students are taught Information Skills in context while researching topics for class assignments and preparing their presentations. There is a focus on observing copyright laws and avoiding plagiarism. Correct citing of references and compiling of bibliographies is emphasised. All lower school classes are regularly timetabled into the library for literature promotion and the opportunity for silent reading. In addition small group and individual tuition is catered for on a regular basis.  Our aim is to prepare our students for life-long learning in a techno-centred world.

Resources

The library currently has 29 computers for student use, one of which is a dedicated catalogue for retrieving print, audio-visual and pictorial resources within the library and throughout the school. A comprehensive collection of fiction and non-fiction resources is available for loan on a fortnightly or overnight basis depending on the demand. Internet and networked resources are accessible from all computers for all students and staff. Colour printing and photocopying is available. Audio, DVD, video and data projector equipment is available for use within and outside the library.

Opening
Times

The library is open daily from 8 am to 4 pm including recess and lunchtimes.  Students often have the opportunity of using the library outside those hours when library staff are in attendance.

Activities

The library hosts several book clubs for lower school, upper school and staff outside of school hours on a regular basis, usually once or twice a term.

The Chess Club meets regularly in the library and students are always welcome to practise at recess and lunchtime.

An after school homework session operates twice a week where students can call on teacher assistance with homework.

The library is the venue for Da Vinci Decathlon team preparation.

Library staff are also involved in organizing the annual Upper and Lower School Academic House competitions.
