Mercedes College offers a wide range of cocurricula activities to cater for the interests of all students. Participation is voluntary and generally requires adult co-ordination and/or supervision. Thus, the range of activities offered is dependent on the support of staff, parents and/or ex-students. Examples of such activities are listed below: Drama Productions. One of the highlights of the school’s cultural calendar is the College’s musical production. Again, depending on the available staff and parental assistance, the Drama department produces a full-scale musical production each year and students are encouraged to audition for parts.
Examples of recent shows include Anne of Green Gables, The Boy Friend, Fiddler on the Roof and The Wizard of Oz. As well, there are opportunities for students to be involved in the House Drama Festivals as well as those associated with both lower and upper school Drama courses. For many students, this involvement is the beginning of an enormously satisfying part of their life at school. There is also plenty of opportunity for girls in all years to work in the practical areas such as back-stage, make-up, front-of-house and lighting. In addition there are regular visits to the College by professional performing artists. Students, therefore, who are interested in and enthusiastic about drama will have every chance at Mercedes to take part in a varied and exciting programme.
Interschool Debating and Public Speaking. The College frequently enters teams in both junior and senior divisions of interschool debating competitions, as well as encouraging individual students to participate in the many public speaking opportunities presented by such groups as Rostrum and Rotary.
Mock Law Trials. The Society and Environment department encourages students to participate in interschool Mock Law Trials conducted by the WA Law Society. These are seen as an important adjunct to Political and Legal Studies, a subject offered in the upper school curriculum.
