Society and the Environment |

The Department of Society and Environment encompasses the disciplines of Economics, Geography, History, and, Political and Legal Studies. In Years 8 to 10 these are taught under the umbrella of the subject “Society and Environment” whilst in Years 11 and 12 they are taught as discrete subjects in themselves. | Year7 | Topics include: Societies and Civilisations of the Past – a History topic that examines the timeline and important periods of human history. Exploring Planet Earth – a topic that equips students with the geographic tools to explore the earth. Aboriginal Australia – a topic that examines pre-1788 life in Australia. | Year 8 | Topics include: Our Planet – Our Survival: - this is a Geography topic which looks at the major physical elements of the planet and how people use it. Asian Studies - a cultural study of the countries of Asia with a major emphasis on China and Japan. W.A – Change over Time – this is a History topic that the early exploration of the west coast, the Swan River Colony, the impact of white settlement on the Nyungar population, the convict history of WA, the 1890’s gold rushes and ending with Federation. The Local Community – a topic that has elements of history, geography, economics and politics of Mercedes College and each student’s home community. | Year 9 | Topics include: Australian Landscapes – a Geography topic that examines the physical and human geography of Australia Australia in the 20th Century – a History topic that looks at Australian economic, political and social development through the 20th century. Government and Law – a Politics and Law topic that looks at the political and legal systems of Australia from the local government level, state level and federal level. Our Consumer Society – an Economics topic that examines the Australian economy from the perspective of a consumer. | Year 10 | Topics include: Environmental Issues – a Geography topic that looks at major environmental issues such as global warming, salinity, deforestation and endangered species. Australian Citizenship – a Politics and Law topic that examines Australian Citizenship and its rights and responsibilities. Economic Systems and Issues – an Economics topic that examines different types of economic systems and issues facing the Australian and world economies today. International Co-operation and Conflict – a History topic that looks at the major conflicts of the 20th century in which Australia has been involved, as well as, the way in which the global community co-operates to minimise conflict. | Year 11 | Economics topics include: Markets – retail goods or services, shares, commodities, labour and foreign exchange. The role of governments in modified market economies. Modern History focus is on : Societies and Change – the Meiji Restoration in Japan
Historical Trends and Movements – Nazism in Germany 1918-45 Geography topics include: Natural hazards and Impact Minimisation Sustainable Resource Use Politics and Law topics include: Political and Legal Systems Representation and Justice | Year 12 | Economics topics include: Macroeconomics
International Economics
Government Economic Policy History focus is on : The Russian revolution and its aftermath.
