The House names of Mercedes College recall significant women of the Sisters of Mercy. McAULEY Catherine McAuley founded the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin in 1831. Today there are 3,500 Sisters of Mercy in Australia and approximately 50,000 scattered around the world. Mother McAuley was a woman of great mercy and compassion to those in need. McAuley House Motto is “MERCY”. The House Colour is Green. | | | | FRAYNE Mother Ursula Frayne was in charge of the Foundation Members of the Sisters of Mercy in Perth in 1846, and could possibly be called the first Principal. She left Western Australia in 1857 to found the order in Melbourne, where she died and is buried. Mother Frayne and her companions worked tirelessly to establish Catholic Education in Western Australia. She was a woman of great courage and fortitude. A plaque in St George’s Terrace commemorates her endeavours. Frayne House Motto is “COURAGE”. The House Colour is Yellow. | McDONALD Mother Brigid McDonald was the Mother General of the Sisters of Mercy in Western Australia from 1920 - 50 and she was responsible for a great many building projects, e.g. our Chapel, Santa Maria College, St Anne’s Hospital and many Mercy Convents. Mother McDonald was a woman of great wisdom and foresight. McDonald House Motto is “WISDOM”. The House Colour is Red. | | | | SERISIER Prior to 1967 there were two schools on the Victoria Square site, St Joseph’s and Our Lady’s College. Mother Dolores Serisier was the first Principal of Mercedes College, which was the amalgamation of the two schools and took place in 1967. Mother Serisier was Principal of St Joseph’s School for 27 years and was the Principal who introduced the Secretarial Class, the Special Education Class and many other far-reaching educational policies at Mercedes College. Mother Serisier always stood for truth and justice. Serisier House Motto is “TRUTH”. The House Colour is Blue. |
