The Physical Education Learning Area focuses on a holistic approach to a student’s health and wellbeing. It recognises the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual dimensions of the individual. Students develop the essential skills, knowledge and understandings that promote and encourage participation in regular physical activity and support the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle. Head of Learning Area Mrs Nicola Porter | Year 7 | Physical Education The Year 7 Physical Education course expands and develops student’s prior knowledge and skill acquisition. It prepares students for sports that are valued at Mercedes College eg: Swimming, Hockey, Athletics, Softball, and Netball. | Year 8 | The Year 8 Physical Education course expands and develops student’s prior knowledge and also introduces sports that are valued at Mercedes College eg: Swimming, Hockey, Athletics, Softball, and Alternative Sports. | Year 9 | Physical Education The Year 9 Physical Education course exposes students to a variety of team games and individual sports such as Swimming, Volleyball, Athletics, Netball and Rhythmic Gym. Students will be encouraged to develop leadership skills through umpiring and also focus on their overall fitness. Physical Education Studies The Year 9 course focuses on broadening and developing the students’ survival skills in a variety of environments including water, bush and suburbia. At the same a conscious effort is made to improve their general fitness and enjoyment by introducing alternate activities. | Year 10 | Physical Education The Year 10 Physical Education course allows students opportunities to demonstrate leadership skills and creativity as well as focusing on general fitness. The sports offered are Swimming, International Rules, Athletics, Basketball and Dance. Physical Education Studies The Year 10 Physical Education Studies course gives the students an opportunity to succeed in an individual sport not usually offered in the general Physical Education Programme and to have an increased awareness of factors relating to individual fitness and performance levels. The aim of this course is also to be an introduction to the Upper School Physical Education Studies course for Years 11 and 12. A double unit of Year 10 PE Studies prepares students for the upper school WACE/TEE PE Studies course. Students will focus on the outcomes covered in the upper school courses at a beginning level and will be assessed accordingly. Three sports will be covered including volleyball, fitness and squash. . | Year 11 | 2A & 2B Physical Education Studies The Physical Education Studies syllabus focuses on four outcomes that are developed and assessed through a variety of tasks and exams. The theoretical aspect focuses on the following topics:- - Movement skills, strategies and Tactics
- Mental skills training/ sports psychology
- Physiological dimensions of sport
- Injuries in physical activity
- Biomechanical aspects of physical activity
- The practical component includes two sports.
Each of these will be covered in depth, involving skill acquisition, strategies, tactics, coaching and rule interpretation. Outcomes - Skills for physical activity
- Self-management and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge and understanding for movement and conditioning concepts
- Knowledge and understanding of sport psychology concepts
Year 12 PE Studies – 3A/3B COURSE CONTENT The Physical Education Studies syllabus focuses on four outcomes that are developed and assessed through a variety of tasks and exams. Students are given two opportunities to complete each task. The theoretical aspect focuses on the following topics; - Movement skills, strategies and Tactics
- Mental skills training/ sports psychology
- Physiological dimensions of sport
- Injuries in physical activity
- Biomechanical aspects of physical activity.
